INDIGEN: DAS NORDAMERIKA-FILMFESTIVAL ist einzigartig in Europa. Exklusiv in Stuttgart werden seit 2004 im zweijährigen Rhythmus Filme gezeigt, in denen Native Americans und First Nations (Inuit und Métis) als Regisseur*innen, Schauspieler*innen und Drehbuchautor*innen ihre Kulturen und Lebenswirklichkeiten vorstellen.

Ziel des Filmfestivals ist es, diese besonderen indigenen Filme einem breiten europäischen Publikum zugänglich zu machen. Besucher*innen haben im Anschluss an die Filmvorführungen Gelegenheit zu Gesprächen und Diskussionen mit Drehbuchautor*innen, Filmschaffenden und Schauspieler*innen.

Ein besonderes Highlight des Festivals ist das Schulkinoprogramm, welches in Kooperation mit UNICEF Stuttgart an den Vormittagen des 13. und 14. Februar 2025 durchgeführt wird. Sieben Schülerinnen und Schüler des Reutlinger Albert Einstein Gymnasiums bilden die Jury für die indigenen Kinderfilme. Sie haben die Aufgabe, die besten Filme auszuwählen und den UNICEF-Kinderfilmpreis zu verleihen. Gemeinsam mit ihrer Lehrerin Iryna Miller sichten sie im November 2024 eingereichte indigene Kinderfilme im Rahmen des Schulunterrichts, übersetzen diese und loben nach Abstimmung die beste Filmproduktion aus, die den UNICEF-Kinderfilmpreis erhält.

Die Schülerinnen und Schüler sowie ihre Lehrerin werden zur Preisverleihung am Freitag, 14. Februar 2025 um 12 Uhr in den Robert-Bosch-Saal des Treffpunkt Rotebühlplatz eingeladen. Dort überreichen sie den UNICEF-Kinderfilmpreis (eine handgefertigte Skulptur der Künstlerin Karin Ecker) an die indigene UNICEF-Repräsentanten des Festivals, Katsitsionni Fox. Anschließend lesen sie ihre Begründung in deutscher und englischer Sprache vor.

INDIGEN: DAS NORDAMERIKA FILMFESTIVAL (10) wird vom 13. bis 16. Februar 2025 im Treffpunkt Rotebühlplatz (vhs Stuttgart) veranstaltet. Das Motto lautet „Reaching for the Stars – Indigenous Cinema on the Rise“. Das Festival bietet die einzigartige Gelegenheit, indigene Filme und Künstlerinnen und Künstler aus Nordamerika kennenzulernen und einen interkulturellen Austausch zu fördern. Es ist eine Plattform, die dazu beiträgt, das Verständnis für die Vielfalt indigener Kulturen zu vertiefen und den indigenen Filmemachern eine Stimme zu geben. Das Rahmenprogramm mit vielfältigen Veranstaltungen beginnt bereit am Montag, 10.02. und endet mit einem Seminar für Lehrerinnen und Lehrer am 17.02.2025

Cara Romero wurde 1977 in Inglewood, Kalifornien geboren und wuchs in der Chemehuevi Valley Indian Reservation auf. Sie studierte am Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe und an der Oklahoma State Universität Film, Bildende Kunst, digitale Medien, Journalismus und Werbefotografie. Ihre Werke werden unter anderem im Autry Museum in Los Angeles, Kalifornien, dem Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian in Washington D.C. und dem American Museum in Britain ausgestellt.

Students and alumni from the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) have been selected to participate in the Indianer Inuit: The North American Native Film Festival which takes place in Stuttgart, Germany, February 6-9, 2020. “Dreams have no borders” is the theme of the festival. 

A goal of the festival is international understanding and cultural dialogue. Besides cinema, it offers the audience the opportunity to personally meet and converse with the Indigenous filmmakers. In films, discussions, and conversations new, exciting, and unexpected themes about the culture of North American Indians can be discussed, leaving one-dimensional clichés far behind.

Supported by the German UNICEF Stuttgart, the American Indian Film Institute and Festival in San Francisco, and the Dreamspeakers International Indigenous Film Festival in Canada, the annual Indianer Inuit is the first and only festival of its kind in Europe.

IAIA’s participation in the festival is due to the efforts of current student Erika Knecht, who started working with the Indianer Inuit film festival in 2018 as an intern for her master’s degree program in art history at the University of Cologne. 

Knecht primarily assisted the festival director, and while doing so she was impressed with how many Indigenous guests were brought to Germany for the festival. She loved how they formed a community far away from home. After finishing her work for her first film festival, she became an organizing member.

When Knecht first began attending IAIA, she discovered that many of her fellow students had just left their reservation for the first time. She thought that it would be a great idea to have IAIA students and films at the festival in Germany, which would provide them with an opportunity they probably would not have had otherwise. 

Upon her return to IAIA in the summer 2018, she had already laid the groundwork to create a collaboration with the Cinematic Arts and Technology Department to send students to Germany to attend the festival. In conjunction with IAIA’s director of advancement Danyelle Means (Oglala Lakota), she was able to finalize the plans.

Current students who will be attending the festival are Carrie Dada (Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma) and Echota KillsNight (Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma), who both bring award-winning short films to the program. 

Additionally, IAIA Alumna Cara Romero (Chemehuevi), a noted photographer, is an invited guest of the festival. She grew up on the Chemehuevi Valley Indian Reservation in the Mohave Desert, and through her award-winning photography she has been able to artistically capture and document the diversity of contemporary Indigenous identities.

IAIA Cinematic Arts and Technology Department chair James Lujan (Taos Pueblo) remarked: “Stuttgart is an opportunity for IAIA’s Cinematic Arts and Technology program to spread its wings internationally. Having our students attend and screen their films at the festival is an important step in marketing and building international awareness and recognition for IAIA.”

DREAMS HAVE NO BORDERS

Das Filmfestival 2020 steht unter dem Thema „Träume haben keine Grenzen“. Für die indigene Bevölkerung Nordamerikas gehören Träume und Visionen zum Leben. Sie eröffnen den Zugang zu unbekannten Welten. Ein Gedanke, der sich zum Lebenstraum entfaltet, gibt Orientierung, Inspiration und Mut. Selbst utopisch erscheinende Träume können wahr werden. So zeigen viele aktuelle Filme, wie indigene Menschen ihre Lebenswirklichkeiten gestalten.

Einer, der sich einen Lebenstraum erfüllte, war Michael Smith (1951-2018), der 1975 das erste Indianische Filminstitut und Filmfestival gegründet hat, um indigenen Filmschaffenden den Weg zu ebnen. Ihm ist es gelungen, den indigenen Film als eigenes Genre zu etablieren, fernab aller Hollywood-Klischees. Sein Traum wurde wahr und Indigene Nordamerikas erzählen heute – auch mit Filmen – ihre eigene Geschichte(n).
