Marie-Pascale Dubé ist Schauspielerin und Regisseurin aus dem kanadischen Quebec. Nachdem sie 2009 ihr Film-Studium an der University of Quebec in Montreal (UQAM) abgeschlossen hatte, ging sie für den Start ihrer beruflichen Karriere nach Paris.

Der Inuit-Kehlkopfgesang ist seit Kindertagen Marie-Pascales ständiger Begleiter und schon früh bildeten sich ganz besondere Klänge heraus, deren Entstehung sie sich nicht erklären kann. Ihre Suche, die gleichermaßen ihre Identität und ihre Stimme betrifft, führte sie mit ihrer Mentorin Charlotte Qamaniq nach Igloolik in Nunavut. Der Film „Rouge Gorge/Deepsong“ (2019) ist ihr erster Dokumentarfilm, bei dem sie selbst Regie geführt hat, und er erzählt ihre Geschichte. Marie-Pascle Dubé lebt heute zwischen Frankreich und Kanada, wo sie sich voll und ganz dem Filmemachen (Regie) und Schauspiel verschrieben hat.

Marie-Pascale Dubé is a French-Quebec actress and director. University of Quebec in Montreal (UQAM) filmmaking graduate (2009), Marie-Pascale began her professional career in Paris. Marie-Pascale is guided by inuit throat singing since she is a child. Some sounds formed in childhood, wich she cannont qualify. Since then, a quest as much for identity as for voice, that will take her to Igloulik in Nunavut with her mentor Charlotte Qamaniq. Rouge Gorge / Deepsong (2019), a film that tells her story, is her first documentary feature film as director. She now lives between France and Canada where she devotes herself to auteur filmmaking (director) and play (actress).

Carrie Dada gehört der Cherokee Nation an. Im Herbst 2019 schloss sie ihr Studium in Cinematic Arts and Technology am Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) ab. Da sie eine Karriere in der Filmindustrie anstrebt, plant Carrie Dada ein Masterstudium im Bereich Film anzuschließen.

Carrie wuchs in einer Kleinstadt in Nord-Kalifornien auf. Bereits mit 16 Jahren reichte sie erste filmische Arbeiten bei einem Filmfestival ein, die auch angenommen wurden. Am Institute of American Indian Arts hat sie seitdem mehrere Kurzfilme gedreht, u. a. den Film “Exhaust”, für den sie eine Auszeichnung erhielt. Dass Filmemachen Carries absolute Leidenschaft ist, lassen die Details ihres neuesten Films “The Dust in Our Eyes” erkennen: Sie versucht in dem Film die wichtige Botschaft zu vermitteln, wie Menschenhandel und sexuelle Übergriffe direkt vor unserer Nase stattfinden können.

Carrie träumt davon, eines Tages beruflich Filme zu machen, am liebsten als Bildregisseurin (Director of Photography). Ihr liegt viel daran, besondere Geschichten künstlerisch visuell umzusetzen und ihr Leben dem Filmemachen zu widmen.

Carrie Dada

Carrie Dada is an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation. She is a student at the Institute of American Indian Arts, studying Cinematic Arts and Technology. Carrie first came to the school in Fall 2016 and obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Fall 2019. In an effort to further her education and pursue a career in the Film Industry, she plans to obtain her Master’s Degree in Film next.

Carrie grew up in a small town in Northern California, getting accepted to her first film festival at the age of 16. Since then, Carrie has produced several short films at the Institute of American Indian Arts, including her award-winning film, „Exhaust.“ Her passion for filmmaking can be seen in the details of her work, in her most recent film, „The Dust in Our Eyes,“ Carrie tries to send an important message about how Human Trafficking and Sexual Assault can be occurring right under our noses.

Carrie hopes to work professionally one day, her favorite role on set being Director of Photography. She wants to tell valuable stories using beautiful visuals and stay in the filmmaking world for the rest of her life.

Echota Killsnight ist Musikkomponist, Videokünstler und Regisseur – und er kann auch Drohnen steuern. Er ist seit über sechs Jahren im Filmgeschäft tätig. Seine Erfahrungen reichen von Werbeproduktionen über Dokumentarfilme, Musikvideos und Kurzfilme bis hin zur Schauspielerei. Echota steht kurz vor seinem Studienabschluss in Cinematic Arts and Technology am Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA).

Einige seiner zahlreichen Filme, die er in den vergangenen Jahren drehte, wurden mit Preisen ausgezeichnet, darunter die Dokumentation “Big Sister Rug” (2016), für die er den Rocky Mountain Emmy Award in Cinematography erhielt.

Wenn Echota gerade nicht mit dem Filmemachen beschäftigt ist, arbeitet er als Programmkoordinator am SITE Santa Fe (Museum für Zeitgenössische Kunst).

Echota Killsnight is a music composer, video editor, director, cinematographer, and drone operator. He has over 6 years of film experience in advertisement, documentary, music videos, short films, and even acting. Echota is currently a senior at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he will be earning his bachelor’s degree in Cinematic Arts and Technology. Echota has worked on many film projects over the years and has received a number of awards including a Rocky Mountain Emmy Award in Cinematography for a documentary called Big Sister Rug (2016). When he is not creating films, he works part time as a Public Programs Coordinator at the contemporary art museum, Site Santa Fe.

Drew Hayden Taylor hat in seiner 30-jährigen Karriere schon einiges gemacht und auf das meiste blickt er stolz zurück. Als Ojibway der Curve Lake First Nations in Ontario, Kanada, schlüpfte er bereits in zahlreiche Rollen: vom Stand-up-Comedian im Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. bis hin zum künstlerischen Leiter von Kanadas erster indigenen Theaterkompagnie “Native Earth Performing Arts”. Drew Hayden Taylor ist preisgekrönter Bühnenautor; als Journalist und Kolumnist schreibt er regelmäßig für mehrere kanadische Zeitungen und Magazine; er verfasst Kurzgeschichten, Novellen und Drehbücher fürs Fernsehen. Zudem drehte er mehrere Dokumentationen, die sich mit der “Native experience” befassen, also spezielle Erfahrungen, die Natives in ihrem Alltag machen. Als Filmschaffender ist insbesondere sein Werk “Redskins, Tricksters and Puppy Stew” hervorzuheben Für diese Dokumentation, die sich mit indigenem Humor beschäftigt und für das National Film Board of Canada produziert wurde, schrieb er das Drehbuch und führte Regie. Für CBC entstand “Searching for Winnetou”, eine Untersuchung der deutschen Indianerbegeisterung.

In seiner Tätigkeit als Bühnenautor ist Drew stolz, Teil der – wie er selbst sagt – zeitgenössischen indigenen Literatur-Renaissance zu sein. Über 20 Stücke, die in knapp 100 Theaterproduktionen mündeten, hat er verfasst. Seine populärsten Stücke “Toronto at Dreamer’s Rock”, “Only Drunks and Children tell the Truth”, “The Berlin Blues” und “Cottagers and Indians” haben die kanadische Theaterszene nachhaltig beeinflusst.

Drew genießt es, die Grenzen dessen, was die Literaturwelt als indigene Literatur einordnet, zu strapazieren. 2007 veröffentlichte der Verlag Annick Press seine erste Geschichte „The Night Wanderer: A Native Gothic Novel“, eine Teenager-Novelle über einen Ojibway-Vampir. 2010 folgte die Veröffentlichung von „Motorcycles & Sweetgrass“, das es in die finale Auswahl des Governor General’s Awards for Fiction schaffte. Erst kürzlich veröffentlichte der Verlag Douglas & McIntyre eine Auswahl seiner Science Fiction-Kurzgeschichten unter dem Titel „Take us to your Chief and other Stories“, in denen Indigenität Thema ist. Im Herbst 2019 erscheint die Novelle „Chasing painted Horses“ (Cormorant Press) als sein 33. Buch.

Der Erfolg als Autor erlaubt es Drew, durch die Welt zu reisen und Indigene Literatur zu verbreiten. Mit seinen Sachbüchern (z. B. das vierbändige „Funny, you don’t look like one“ oder „Me funny, me sexy, me artsy“) möchte er die Welt über Themen der kanadischen First Nations informieren, sie reflektieren und feiern und so einen Beitrag zur Bildung leisten.

Drew beschreibt sich selbst als zeitgenössischen Geschichtenerzähler; die Erkundung der Erzähltradition hat einige Grenzen sichtbar gemacht. Als Beispiele sind „Mixed Blessings“, eine TV-Comedy-Serie sowie weitere populäre kanadische Fernsehserien, für die er als Autor tätig war, wie „Beachcombers“ und „North of 60“. Der Fernsehfilm „In a World created by a drunken God“, der auf Drews Theaterstück basiert, welches in die finale Auswahl des Governor General Award for Drama gelangte, erhielt Nominierungen für drei Gemini Awards, u. a. als bester Film. 2011 und 2012 verfasste er das Script für die „National Aboriginal Achievement Awards“, jetzt als „Inspire Awards“ bekannt.

In den vergangenen Jahren konnte Drew als Writer-In-Residence (ähnlich einem Stipendium) an mehreren Institutionen tätig sein, darunter: Berton House in Dawson City, Yukon, University of Michigan, University of Western Ontario, Universität Lüneburg, Ryerson University und Wilfrid Laurier; als Gastgeber der kanadischen Theaterkompagnien z. B. beim Cahoots Theatre, Blyth Theater und weiteren.

Die Jahre als Autor bescherten Drew nicht nur viel Lob seitens der Fachkolleginnen und -kollegen sondern auch zahlreiche Auszeichnungen, z. B. den Floyd S. Chalmers Award, den Dora Mavor Moore Award und den Canadian Author’s Literary Award. Zudem durfte er einige Ehrungen empfangen, u. a. die Ehrendoktorwürde (Jura) der Mount Allison University, eine Ehrenplakette auf dem Peterborough Walk of Fame, den Queen Elisabeth Diamond Jubilee Award, den Ontario Premier’s Award for Creative Arts and Design sowie den Victoria Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award for Outstanding Artistic Achievement in Theatre.

A BIOGRAPHY OF DREW HAYDEN TAYLOR

During the last thirty years of his career, Drew Hayden Taylor has done many things, most of which he is proud of. An Ojibway from the Curve Lake First Nations in Ontario, he has worn many hats in his literary career, from performing stand-up comedy at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., to being Artistic Director of Canada’s premiere Native theatre company, Native Earth Performing Arts. He has been an award-winning playwright, a journalist/columnist (appearing regularly in several Canadian newspapers and magazines), short-story writer, novelist, television scriptwriter, and has worked on numerous documentaries exploring the Native experience. Most notably as a filmmaker, he wrote and directed REDSKINS, TRICKSTERS AND PUPPY STEW, a documentary on Native humour for the National Film Board of Canada, and for CBC, co-created SEARCHING FOR WINNITOU, an exploration of Germany’s fascination with North American Indigenous culture.

As a playwright, Drew has proudly been a part of what he refers to as the contemporary Native Literary Renascence. An author of more than 20 plays (resulting in almost a hundred productions), his popular plays such as TORONTO AT DREAMER’S ROCK, ONLY DRUNKS AND CHILDREN TELL THE TRUTH, THE BERLIN BLUES, and COTTAGERS AND INDIANS have left their mark on the Canadian theatre scene.

In the world of prose, he enjoys spreading the boundaries of what is considered Indigenous literature.
In 2007, Annick Press published his first Novel, THE NIGHT WANDERER: A Native Gothic Novel, a teen novel about an Ojibway vampire. 2010 saw the publication of his novel MOTORCYCLES & SWEETGRASS (Finalist for the Governor General’s Award for Fiction). More recently, Douglas & McIntyre published a collection of his Native themed science fiction short stories, titled TAKE US TO YOUR CHIEF AND OTHER STORIES. This fall, a new novel titled CHASING PAINTED HORSES, published by Cormorant Press, will brings his publication total to 33 books.

His success as a writer has allowed him the opportunity to travel the world, spreading the gospel of Native literature. Through many of his non-fiction books, from the four volume set titled FUNNY, YOU DON’T LOOK LIKE ONE, to the ME FUNNY, ME SEXY, ME ARTSY series, he has tried to educate and inform the world about issues that reflect, celebrate, and interfere in the lives of Canada’s First Nations.

Self-described as a contemporary story teller, his exploration of the storytelling tradition has explored many boundaries. For example, he co-created and was the head writer for MIXED BLESSINGS, a television comedy series as well as contributed scripts to four other popular Canadian television series including BEACHCOMBERS and NORTH OF 60. In 2007, a made-for-tv movie he wrote, IN A WORLD CREATED BY A DRUNKEN GOD (based on his play which was a finalist for the Governor General Award for Drama) was nominated for three Gemini Awards, including Best Movie. In 2011 and 2012, he wrote the script for the National Aboriginal Achievement Awards, now known as the INDSPIRE AWARDS

The last few years has seen him proudly serve as the Writer-In-Residence at the Berton House in Dawson City Yukon, the University of Michigan, the University of Western Ontario, University of Luneburg (Germany), Ryerson University, Wilfrid Laurier, as well as a host of Canadian theatre companies i.e. Cahoots theatre, Blyth Theatre etc.

The years of writing have brought him many accolades by his peers, including the Floyd S. Chalmers Award, Dora Mavor Moore Award and the Canadian Author’s Literary Award, He has also been the recipient of many other varied honours; an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from Mount Allison University, a Plaque of Honour on the Peterborough Walk of Fame, the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Award, Ontario Premier’s Award for Creative Arts and Design, and Victoria Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award for Outstanding Artistic Achievement in Theatre, to name a few.

Oddly enough, the thing his mother was most proud of was his ability to make spaghetti from scratch.

There are entertainment legends, and then there is Tom Jackson, a triple-threat actor, musician, and activist whose achievements in each discipline are downright head-spinning. Jackson’s career is unparalleled, not to mention wildly acclaimed, abundantly decorated, and almost ridiculously interesting. Heck, Jackson could be a pub night trivia category all by himself.

Now, at an age when most are pulling back, the 70-year-old Calgary-based star is barreling towards the busiest and most glittering chapter in his towering 40-odd-year run at the forefront of contemporary film, TV, and music.

It’s impossible to regard Tom’s music separately from the other aspects of his remarkable career which include (but are not limited to) countless marquee TV roles on hit shows like North of 60, Shining Time Station, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Law & Order.  Guest roles in Season 4 of Outlander and Season 3 of Cardinal aired in early 2019 and Season 2 of Red Earth Uncovered follows.   2018 marked the release of The Essential Tom Jackson, a dazzling two-disc, 21-track retrospective spotlighting his inimitable talent as a folk-pop singer/songwriter of the highest order and an artist intrinsically linked to the world around him, both the real and the ethereal.

There’s also movies, lots of movies, including the dark comedy thriller Cold Pursuit opposite Liam Neeson. Multiple additional honours, including the 2007 Gemini Humanitarian Award, have been bestowed on him over the years.  But those above-mentioned three, perhaps more than any others, have cemented his status as one of Canada’s most influential, distinguished, and revered sons.

Tantoo Cardinal’s outstanding career broke barriers for many more Indigenous actors. Opposing stereotypes, she supports a positive representation of Indigenous peoples in film. In 2009, she was appointed a member of the Order of Canada for her contributions to Aboriginal performing arts in Canada.

In 2018, she was invited to become a new member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the „Oscars Academy“.

Tantoo Cardinal has been an environmental activist for years. In 2011, she protested against the Keystone XL pipeline in front of the White House in Washington.

Mit ihrem stets düsteren und von arktischer Schönheit durchzogenen Stil, haben sich die Schwestern Tiffany Kuliktana Ayalik und Kayley Inuksuk Mackay zusammengetan und das Inuit Throat Singing (Kehlkopfgesang) Duo PIQSIQ gegründet. Zu ihrem Repertoire gehören alte, traditionelle Lieder ebenso wie schaurige neue Kompositionen. Sie verstehen es, ihr Publikum zu verzaubern und mit der unendlichen Anzahl möglicher Antworten auf die Frage nach dem Sinn des Lebens, zurückzulassen.

Die Wurzeln der beiden Schwestern liegen in den Regionen von Kitikmeot und Kivalliq (Nunavut, Kanada); aufgewachsen sind sie in Yellowknife (Northwest Territories, Kanada), wo der Erhalt ihrer Verbindung mit der Inuitkultur oft eine Herausforderung war. Nach jahrelanger, harter Arbeit an den musikalischen Fähigkeiten, entwickelten sie schließlich ihren eigenen Stil, in dem sich ihre Liebe zu schwermütigen Melodien und jenseitigen Klängen widerspiegelt.

Mit dem Erreichen des Erwachsenenalters wurde den Schwestern klar, dass der traditionelle Kehlkopfgesang nicht nur musikalischer Ausdruck ist, sondern auch ein radikaler und politischer Akt der Wiederbelebung ihres Kulturguts.

Der Name des schwesterlichen Duos „PIQSIQ“ beschreibt ihr gemeinsames Gefühl von Verwirrung hinsichtlich ihrer Identität als Heranwachsende. Auf Inuktitut bezeichnet „piqsiq“ einen Sturm, der entsteht, wenn der Wind derart bläst, dass der Schnee wieder „rückwärts“ in den Himmel hinauffliegt.

Als Kinder mehrerer kultureller Hintergründe sind Kayley und Tiffany es gewohnt, durch seltsame kulturelle Gewässer und Eigenheiten zu navigieren. Sie haben gelernt, sich diese Herausforderung zu eigen zu machen.

Auf der Bühne performt PIQSIQ „improvisational looping“ und kreiert dem Publikum ein besonderes Erlebnis, welches bei jedem Auftritt variiert. PIQSIQ hat es geschafft, diese eindringliche, ätherische („ethereal“) Plastizität auf ihrem ersten Studioalbum „Altering the Timeline“ einzufangen. Die Ausrichtung des Albums kam während einer spontanen Jam Session am Ufer des Bow Rivers mit Ruby Singh zustande, während des Calgary Folk Music Festivals im Sommer 2018.

PIQSIQ tritt sowohl in Kanada als auch international auf. Kayley and Tiffany freuen sich darauf, dass „der Zauber weitergeht“ und sie schauen gespannt neuen musikalischen Kollaborationen entgegen, sowie der weiteren Entwicklung ihres zauberhaften Stils.

With a style perpetually galvanized by darkness and haunting northern beauty, sisters, Tiffany Kuliktana Ayalik and Kayley Inuksuk Mackay, come together to create Inuit style throat singing duo, PIQSIQ. Performing ancient traditional songs and eerie new compositions, they leave their listeners enthralled with the infinity of possible answers to the question “what is the meaning of life.”

With roots in Nunavut’s Kitikmeot and Kivalliq Regions, the two sisters grew up in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories where keeping a connection to their Inuit culture was often challenging. After years of forging hard won skill, they developed their own form blended with their love of haunting melodies and otherworldly sounds.

As the sisters approached adulthood they realized throat singing was not only a musical expression, but a radical, political act of cultural revitalization.

PIQSIQ’s name stems from the sisters’ shared feelings of confusion regarding their identities growing up. In Inuktut, a “piqsiq” is a storm that happens when the winds blow in a very specific way, making it look like the snow is falling back up towards the sky. Being children of blended backgrounds, Kayley and Tiffany always felt they had to navigate strange cultural waters and have learned to embrace that journey.

As PIQSIQ, they perform improvisational looping live, creating a dynamic audience experience that changes with every show. PIQSIQ incorporates that haunting, ethereal feel into their debut album Altering the Timeline. The direction for the album sparked during a spontaneous jam session with Ruby Singh next to the Bow River at the Calgary Folk Music Festival in the summer of 2018.

PIQSIQ continues to perform both nationally and internationally. Kayley and Tiffany are excited for the magic to continue as they seek out new collaborations and further develop their entrancing style.

Cara Romero wurde 1977 in Inglewood, Kalifornien/USA geboren. Sie ist auf der Chemehuevi Valley Indian Reservation am Ufer des Havsu Lake im Herzen der Mohave-Wüste aufgewachsen und lebte außerdem in Houston, Texas und Santa Fe, New Mexiko. Ihre mehrschichtige Ausbildung in den Bereichen Film, Digitalfotografie, Portrait- und Werbefotografie, Bildende Kunst und Journalismus spiegelt sich in ihren Werken wider. Sie vermag mit ihren Fotografien die Vielfalt aktueller indigener Identitäten künstlerisch einzufangen und zu dokumentieren. Cara stellt regelmäßig auf dem Indian Market in Santa Fe und dem Indian Art Market des Heard Museums in Phoenix, Arizona aus.

Auf diesen beiden berühmten Kunstmärkten wurde sie bereits mehrfach ausgezeichnet. Sie erhielt 2017 den „Visions for the Future“-Preis des Native American Rights Funds. Die Robert Nichol’s Gallery in Santa Fe zeigt Caras Werke ganzjährig. Cara lebt und arbeitet in Santa Fe und ist mit dem Cochiti-Keramikkünstler Diego Romero verheiratet.

Born in Inglewood, CA in 1977, Cara was raised on the Chemehuevi Valley Indian reservation along the California shoreline of Havasu Lake in the heart of the Mojave Desert, and later, Houston, TX, and Santa Fe, NM.

Cara’s work reflects her diverse training in film, digital, fine art, journalism, editorial portraiture and commercial photography. She shows at both the Santa Fe Indian Market and the Heard Indian Art Market. She has won several awards including ribbons at both major markets and the “Visions for the Future“ award from the Native American Rights Fund. Her work is featured year round at the Robert Nichol’s Gallery of Santa Fe. Cara lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico and is married to Cochiti potter Diego Romero.

Acosia Red Elk ist Mitglied der Umatilla Indian Reservation im Nordosten Oregons/USA. Die zehnfache Weltmeisterin im Jingle Dance (beim „Schellen-Tanz“ wird ein mit Schellen/Glöckchen besticktes Kleid getragen, welches die Bewegungen der Tänzerin lautstark untermalt) unterrichtet Powwow-Tanz und ist außerdem Mutter, Künstlerin und Kulturvermittlerin. Sie jagt, fischt, gärtnert und schneidert und liebt das Snowboardfahren.

Vor vier Jahren begann Acosia Yoga zu unterrichten – inklusive Powwow Yoga als besonderer Form. Ihre Botschaft lautet: „Bewegung ist Medizin“. Ihr Training fördert das physische und psychische Wohlbefinden mit dem Ziel dem historischen und emotionalen Trauma etwas entgegenzusetzen. Sie inspiriert heute zahlreiche Native Americans, ihre Träume zu verfolgen und gleichzeitig Kontrolle über die eigene Gesundheit und das Wohlbefinden zu erlangen. Es gilt, negative Effekte des (kollektiven) Traumas umzukehren und eine bessere Zukunft für die nachfolgenden Generationen aufzubauen. Gezieltes Training von Bewegung und Achtsamkeit eröffnet hierbei neue Wege der Heilung von historischen und emotionalen Traumata.

Acosia Red Elk wird im Rahmen des kommenden Nordamerika-Filmfestivals 2020 in Stuttgart auftreten.

Acosia Red Elk is an Enrolled Member of the Umatilla Indian Reservation in Northeastern Oregon. Acosia is a 10 time World Champion Jingle Dancer and Powwow Dance Teacher among many other things such as; mother, Artist, Cultural teacher, hunter, fisher, gardener, boarder, seamstress, thrill seeker, etc.

She began teaching Yoga 4 years ago which guided her to finding her voice as a Wellness Leader. She is passionate about sharing Yoga, Powwow Yoga, Movement and Mindfulness with People, introducing it as a way to heal from Historical and emotional Trauma.

Spreading Awareness about the Healing benefits of Yoga and Movement and the Power of Thought. And how these tools can be used daily to release toxic stress and reduce trauma held in the body.
